Professorship in the Green Technologies in Landscape Architecture at TU Munich and co-founder of the Research Group “Baubatanik” at the Institute of Architectural Theory and Design (IGMA) at the University of Stuttgart. Ludwig is considered to be a pioneer in the field of Baubatanik, the building method of living plant constructions, where the plant growth process and engineering approaches are combined. He also has broadened research to acknowledge growth and decay and opportunities available in utilizing plants in the context of changing building design as well as adaptation to climate change
