Dr. Katerina Varveri

Associate Professor of Chemomechanics of Infrastructure Materials
Department of Civil Engineering and Geosciences

Dr. A. (Katerina) Varveri is an Associate Professor of Chemomechanics of Infrastructure Materials at the Engineering Structures department in Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology.

Katerina’s research extends to exploring the potential of biobased materials as substitutes for traditional bitumen in pavement construction, using a chemomechanics-based material design approach.

Her group aims to create innovative binders that integrate with other sustainable practices, including the incorporation of recycled materials and the implementation of low-temperature asphalt production methods. The objective is to develop binders that not only meet technical performance standards, but also exhibit long-term durability and have a low environmental impact.

Katerina is the Research Coordinator for the Netherlands in the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) and the secretary of the Academy of Pavement and Science and Engineering (APSE). Since 2020, she also serves as the Deputy Chair in the RILEM Technical Committee 295-FBB on fingerprinting bituminous binders.
