Steimle Architekten’s Markolfhalle is a multipurpose community hall that explores how timber can be used to create a large-scale public building with a strong connection to its surroundings. Constructed almost entirely from locally sourced spruce, the building uses an exposed timber frame as its main structural system, allowing the construction itself to become part of the architectural expression.
The project is particularly interesting for the way the timber structure continues beyond the enclosed space. A large overhanging roof creates a sheltered outdoor area, extending the use of the hall and creating a gradual transition between the building and the landscape. Inside, the rhythm of the timber frame gives the space a clear identity while maintaining the flexibility needed for sports, events, and community gatherings.
Through a relatively simple construction approach, Markolfhalle demonstrates how regional timber can be used for contemporary public architecture, combining structural efficiency with a warm and inviting atmosphere.
