Arquipélago explores the expressive possibilities of engineered timber through a lightweight curved structure that appears to float above the landscape. Built from glued laminated timber, the house is formed by a sequence of arched frames that create both the architectural identity and the structural system of the project.
The curved geometry responds to the natural contours of the site while also taking advantage of the structural efficiency of the arch. By shaping the timber into a continuous structural rhythm, the design reduces the need for additional bracing and minimises the amount of material required, allowing the building to remain light and delicate despite the challenging mountainous conditions.
The project is particularly interesting for the way the timber structure becomes the main architectural element. Prefabricated off-site and assembled on location, each curved frame reveals the possibilities of contemporary timber construction, where digital fabrication and engineered wood allow forms that are both technically efficient and closely connected to their surroundings.
